Instructions to Authors The Philippine Journal of Gastroenterology publishes articles dealing with clinical and basic science covering topics involving the digestive system including those of the liver, pancreas and nutrition. The type of articles that the Philippine Journal of Gastroenterology will publish include original research articles, meta-analysis and review articles, case reports and case series, editorials to the editor or authors and supplements as deemed necessary. Manuscripts must be prepared in accordance with the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to the Biomedical Journals" developed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (N Engl J Med 1991; 324: 424-8) Ethics and Authorship The Philippine Journal of Gastroenterology strongly discourages the submission of more than one article dealing with related aspects of the same study and recommends that these be reported in a single article. The editorial staff considers research and publication misconduct to be a serious breach of ethics and will take action as necessary to address such misconduct. Research or publication misconduct will include but not limited to the following:
Submission of an article the data of which was fabricated or was otherwise intentionally made erroneous. Submission of an article which has been published elsewhere by a different author without due acknowledgment. Submission of an article which has been published elsewhere by the same author without due acknowledgment.
Previous publication of abstracts is not considered duplicate publication but should be disclosed at the time of submission of the manuscript. The authors should in addition submit a disclosure of all or any financial arrangement with any company or institution which then must be duly acknowledged in a footnote in the manuscript. The credit for authorship requires substantial contributions in the conception and design of the study, analysis and interpretation of data, drafting or revision of the manuscript and approval of the final version of the manuscript. Each author on the grounds of sufficient participation in the work involved in the production of the article should be able to take public responsibility for the contents of the article.
Manuscript Preparation Manuscripts must be submitted in hard copies and accompanies by a diskette containing an electronic copy of the text saved in Word Format (.doc) or Richtext format (.rtf) to include glossy prints and electronic versions of the figures in the article. Manuscripts must be typed in 12 point fonts and double spaced with 1 inch margin limited to 4,000 words excluding the abstract, title page and references. The different sections of the manuscripts should always begin on a separate page arranged as follows: title page, abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, references, figures and figure legends and tables. Each page of the manuscript should be numbered and the last name of the first author be placed at the top of the page. The references, tables and figures should be cited consecutively as they appear in the text. The authors will be held responsible in applying for permission for both print and electronic rights for all borrowed materials including the fees to these applications.
Title Page The title page should contain the following: Title- should not use abbreviations and limited to 120 characters Short title-Limited to 45 characters Authors- should include the full names including the middle initial of all authors and the name and location of the department and/or institution where the work was conducted. In cases where there are multiple authors involving more than one department and/or institution, indicate individual affiliation by means of an Arabic number in superscript. Grant Support-List all funding sources supporting the work Abbreviations - all abbreviations should be listed alphabetically Correspondence- Provide the name, mailing and email addresses, telephone numbers and fax numbers
Abstract Should be organized and structured with the following headings: Introduction, Methods, Results and Conclusion and should be limited to only 250 words. Do not use abbreviations, footnotes and references.
Body of the Paper Drugs and chemicals should be mentioned in generic names but if desired, brand names can be mentioned in parenthesis or as a footnote.
References References should be cited consecutively in the order of appearance in the text using Arabic numerals as superscripts. All the authors of referenced articles should be cited when the number of authors is six or less, where there are seven or more authors, only the first three authors should be cited followed by "et al". Personal communications and unpublished data should be cited directly in the text without being numbered. Journal abbreviations should conform to those used ion the Index Medicus. Tables All tables should have been created using the table editor in Word Format. Tables should be numbered according to its order of appearance in the text. The table number and the title should appear above the table while explanatory notes should appear below the table.
Figure and Figure Legends Figure legends should be numbered according to its order of appearance in the text. Enough information should be provided to allow interpretation of the figure without having to refer to the text. Authors should provide if applicable an electronic version of the figure and laser generated prints or glossy prints for photographs. Each figure should be identified with the first author's last name and figure number.
Manuscript Processing and Editing Subject to review by the Manuscript Reviewer, each manuscript will be assigned a Manuscript Reviewer who will determine acceptability of the manuscript and suggest revisions in terms of the format, scientific journalism, data presentation, statistical analysis, data interpretation including acknowledgement of study limitations. If the manuscript is judged acceptable, it will then be assigned to one or more of the Peer Reviewers who will evaluate, subject t to review by the Associate Editor, the scientific hypothesis, clinical impact, study conclusions, and ethical issues of the study. The Editor-in-Chief will be exclusively responsible for the editorial content of the journal and will likewise be exclusively responsible in communicating with authors of submitted manuscripts regarding issues on acceptance, revisions and rejections.
