         Message from the Editor-in-Chief

By Erlinda V. Valdellon, M.D.

I am truly honored to have been appointed editor-in-chief of the Philippine Journal of Gastroenterology. I thank the board of the Philippine Society of Gastroenterology for the privilege of heading this publication.

The renewed interest in the publication of the society's journal is a clear manifestation of the organization's commitment to the scholarly pursuit of knowledge in the field of gastroenterology and related disciplines. As new facts and information are uncovered in the dynamic field, we are reminded of the task to disseminate this wealth of knowledge to our esteemed colleagues. I envision this journal to be a relevant tool to assist us in this endeavor.

In recent years there has been a marked increase in the scope and intensity of medical research in the Philippines, especially in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology. One reason may be because of the increase in the number of trainees and training centers in this subspecialty which has added to the volume of research output. The dedication and commitment of many gastroenterologists involved in research have also resulted in the production of excellent scientific papers.

During the recent conventions of the PSG and PSDE, numerous basic and clinical studies have been presented. These have created further interest in the application of knowledge and skills unique to our local setting. Research projects, however, will not be complete unless the work is subjected to review by the researcher's peers, published in a respected journal and critiqued by the medical community.

I believe the PJG will be more than a static compilation of scientific articles of historic worth. Its importance as an expanding reference material for the growing number of medical students, trainees and practitioners of gastroenterology will be invaluable. We must not forget that the evidence-based practice of medicine is essentially predicated on what has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. It is my hope that the PJG will serve as a consistent reflection of the state-of-the-art practice of gastroenterology and hepatology in the country,

Let us forge together our intellectual resources and experiences to ensure that this noble vision becomes a reality. I look forward to a productive collaboration through your conscientious readership and contributions. Thank you.
